Sci: Yesterday, the students were shown a “contraption” (tube with strings coming out of 4 ‘corners’) They are encouraged to create a “MODEL” of how they think the “contraption” works. A diagram of how the students believe it “works” will earn a “C” grade. A diagram and an attempt to model how it works will earn a B grade. A diagram and an accurate working model will earn an A grade.

The intent of the assignment is to encourage students to “think like scientists” in how we use models to try to understand the things we can NOT see based on the patterns and behaviors that we CAN see.

This assignment is due on Thursday. Dec 7th. It will not be accepted AFTER Thursday (as the answer will be exposed then!) PLEASE do not allow students to search the internet as this defeats the purpose of the activity. Students will learn more from “guess and check” as they try to “model” an explanation to show HOW the strings are able to move. DON’T CHEAT THEIR LEARNING!
